A Snobby Week in Review with Dan Norris

Well, here it is….the first of my weekly blogs for this grand and glorious website. And let me say, this is a hell of a week to start such a venture. Well, as much as I love music, my knowledge of BRAND NEW releases and unheard of tunes is lacking, so I will instead stay on the movies side of this whole site….as you may have noticed already.

And, of course I wouldn’t have a movie-centered blog without talking about the most talked about movie of the summer (and I say that without a shred of hesitation), The Dark Knight Rises. I’d be expected to write some lengthy review about the movie, but I really do feel a review for a movie of the quality TDKR achieved should be left for wordsmiths that far exceed myself. No, instead, I will be talking about the sad news that followed on the tails of the midnight release as swiftly as the cape that follows The Batman himself.

Yes, I am making a reference to the Aurora, Colorado shootings that took place at the Midnight Premier for this film. The death toll is somewhere between 12 and 14 people, the wounded numbering nearly 4 times that number. In all, it’s speculated the horrible act of violence is responsible for creating 71 new victims of senseless crime and mayhem. I’m not going to sit here and talk about the events like I know any more of the information than what has been released through mainstream media, but what I will say is that such acts did, in fact, mar the sparkling release of Christopher Nolan’s Final Chapter to his Batman series.

I really do feel that the movie will be remembered in film form through it’s numerous reviews (on this site and others), as well as for the countless awards it’s bound to win, but behind all that, I’m deeply saddened that it will also be remembered for the acts of brutality during a midnight screening in a small town in Colorado. It will be remembered as the movie that caused 12 to 14 families to make funeral arraignments for lost love ones. And it really is too bad, because this film deserved SO much more than that…

I know it’s neigh impossible to have a moment of silence in a text-based blog such as this, but I will try. I implore you, as you read this, to bow your heads, and realize the loss we suffered today. Realize that the people that died in Aurora are the same as you and me. Movie lovers, and lovers of Entertainment in general. Bow your heads, and remember them, because I am.

I really do wish my first weekly blog would have been able to have a more positive, happier tone, but alas, I found that feeling to be impossible on a day I’ve looked forward to since The Dark Knight Rises made it’s presence known with it’s Official Trailer all those months ago. All I can say is I hope next week is a lot less dark. Here’s hoping…See you next week!
