Clement Oubrerie

Born: December 23, 1966Died: March 1, 2026

Clément Oubrerie was a prolific French illustrator, animator, and comic book artist whose work brought a unique sense of lightness and cultural depth to the medium. The son of architect José Oubrerie, he studied in Paris before honing his craft in the United States, eventually returning to France to become a leading voice in children’s literature and graphic novels. His style, characterized by nervous yet fluid lines and atmospheric pastels, allowed him to tackle diverse subjects—from the bustling streets of 1970s Ivory Coast to the bohemian studios of 20th-century Montmartre—with equal parts humor and sensitivity. Oubrerie’s career was defined by iconic collaborations, most notably with Marguerite Abouet on the global phenomenon "Aya of Yopougon." The series, which won the First Album Prize at Angoulême in 2006, was praised for its vibrant, non-miserabilist portrayal of African daily life while subtly addressing themes of female empowerment and social change. He also excelled in artistic biographies, partnering with Julie Birmant to create acclaimed works like "Pablo" (exploring the youth of Picasso), "Isadora" (on dancer Isadora Duncan), and "Dali." His versatility extended to animation as well; as co-founder of Autochenille Production, he co-directed the film adaptations of The Rabbi’s Cat and Aya of Yopougon, the former winning a César for Best Animated Film. In his later years, Oubrerie continued to break new ground, collaborating with Leïla Slimani on "Hand in Hand" (À mains nues), a powerful biography of pioneer surgeon Suzanne Noël. Despite being diagnosed with Charcot’s disease (ALS) in 2023, he remained dedicated to his art and his partnership with Birmant, whom he married in 2024. He passed away on March 1, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of "luminous and solar" storytelling that transformed the way readers engage with history, art, and the diverse cultures of the world
