Edwin Abbott Abbott was an English schoolmaster, clergyman, and Shakespearean scholar who served as headmaster of the City of London School from age 26 until his retirement in 1889. He is best remembered today for "Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions" (1884), a satirical novella about a two-dimensional world used to explore geometry, perspective, and social hierarchy, which later gained renewed popularity among science fiction readers. He also wrote extensively on theology and English grammar.
