Peter Wohlleben is a German forester and author, born in Bonn in 1964. After training in forestry at Rottenburg am Neckar, he worked from 1987 as a government forest ranger in Rhineland-Palatinate, growing disillusioned with conventional forestry practices such as heavy machinery use and pesticide spraying. He now manages an ecologically-run beech forest for the municipality of Hümmel and runs a forest academy offering public tours. His books, drawing on decades of field observation, include the international bestseller The Hidden Life of Trees: What They Feel, How They Communicate, along with The Inner Life of Animals, The Secret Wisdom of Nature, Can You Hear the Trees Talking?, and The Power of Trees. He is known for his advocacy of ecological forest management and for arguing that trees and plants have their own forms of communication and sentience.
