It took me years to find out that this movie was spoofing a genre that really doesn't exist anymore. The pot boiler thriller was al the rage in the 1970s and early 80s. Each one was filled with actors a decade or two past their prime and stunt casting athletes or other people not normally in films.
Airplane did an amazing job at making fun of all of that.

Flying a plane is no different than riding a bicycle, just a lot harder to put baseball cards in the spokes.

You'd better tell the Captain we've got to land as soon as we can. This woman has to be gotten to a hospital. A hospital? What is it? It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.
I haven't felt this awful since we saw that Ronald Reagan film.
