Zahler is a weird film maker. His strange and profoundly reactionary yet deeply cynical worldview informs everything he makes and completely rejects any sort of boxes that people try and place him in. Dragged Across Concrete is a hard movie to watch. The violence is hard. The racism is hard. The characters are largely unlikeable. But it's a rough story that's told and filmed exceptionally well.

Always a fascinating director. For example, Zahler is clearly some shade of conservative but he's pretty ruthless in his portrayal of the cops here being shitty, and being shitty precisely because they're self-absorbed and racist. Me and my wife enjoyed this movie and recommended it to some of our friends and they were HORRIFIED when they watched it because Zahler never comes out and babies the audience. He expects you to know that Mel Gibson and crew are shitheads without spelling it out for you. I appreciate that, but apparently it's lost on some people. On a somewhat related and maybe insightful note, in one of his books set in a dystopian future he has a government that turns all the cars into rubber and foam and they're constantly bouncing off each other and flipping over like in some hysterical Rush Limbaugh fever dream lol
