A Fresh Spider-Man

I loved Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and its sequel. One of the biggest surprises was Spider-Noir, hilariously voiced by Nicolas Cage. He is a version of Spider-Man from a noir universe where the heroes and villains are styled after the exaggerated Art Deco aesthetic of the 1930s and presented entirely in black and white. So when I heard the character was getting his own television series... man, I was excited.

My excitement took a hit when I learned the show would be live action. A feature film would have been one thing, but could a streaming series really do a concept with this much potential justice?

The answer is yes.

This show is a lot of fun.

Nicolas Cage does what he does best, and he is surrounded by some of the most underrated character actors working today. Brendan Gleeson and Lamorne Morris are particular standouts. I have also been a fan of Jack Huston for years, and I am always happy to see him show up in anything.

Amazon Prime also gives viewers the option to watch the series in black and white. I know life isn't actually black and white, but watching a hard-boiled detective story set in a fictionalized 1930s New York in monochrome adds another layer of texture and authenticity that I really appreciated. The lighting, production design, and even the actors' makeup all appear to have been crafted with black-and-white presentation in mind.

This show is a great deal of fun. While I may never revisit it myself, I would happily recommend it to fans of Spider-Man, Nicolas Cage, or classic noir.
