Exists to establish the average
I am not going to lie after watching the pilot of 'Welcome to Derry' I remembered that I owned this audio book. I needed something to listen to while I was on the road and so this was as good a choice as any.
This was the second DNF of 2024. So if you want to ignore or discount my assessment of this book because of that, that's fair.
Stephen King is simply not for me. His prose wasn't bad. We can argue if he is talented but you can't deny the man's commitment. He is going to do the work of writing and creating a world. And he built a pulpy world named Derry and populated with characters that lived and breathed. I felt I knew everyone he wrote about. I could see this town in Maine and with out knowing its history I felt I knew it.
But after the 4 hours into a 14 hour audio book I felt like I knew everything I needed to know about the town, these people and their world. I knew about all the main characters, their careers, their interests, both as children and as adults. I knew about the victims, characters created to serve as fodder for Pennywise. I knew about Derry's history, tragic as it may be. But none of that stopped King from going on...and on...and on. My disinterest festered and I found myself ignoring this audio book and that's when I decided to stop.
Steven King is a professional writer. His works get turned into sometimes great films and sometimes they turn into jokes. He is prolific if nothing else. But he just isn't for me. This is the third Steven King book I have attempted and the last I will ever attempt.
If you like wondering prose this book is for you. For me I wanted a little more urgency in the narrative.
