Description

Early September 1939, Yugoslavia. Dominated by the German Auto Union and Mercedes teams (the Silver Arrows) since the beginning of the 1930s, motorsport, like other sports, also serves as a propaganda tool for the Nazi regime. As Europe falters and war becomes as inevitable as it is imminent, the Belgrade Grand Prix on September 3, 1939, is meant to be yet another demonstration of force by the Nazi single-seaters. But with the invasion of Poland two days prior and the declaration of war that very day, it will mark the end of a golden age where heroes were named Nuvolari, Lang, Müller, Stück, von Brauchitsch, Caracciola… Caught in the turmoil, the drivers present no longer have their hearts in the race, but the propaganda chiefs will force them to compete. With only five cars at the start, the Grand Prix will not go down in the annals of motorsport history; it will simply be the last time the engines of these racing bolides roar before giving way to those of the Panzers and Stukas… One last dance before twilight descends upon the world. Youssef Daoudi delivers a breathless saga where the passion for sport collides with the brutality of a world on the brink. An extensively researched narrative served by a nervous, edgy art style that perfectly captures the urgency of the moment.
