Ostentatious bastard.
This film, like the other two Nick Cave movies that have followed it, is a wonderful companion piece to the Bad Seeds record that was created around its time of filming. This was a more disheartening watch than I'm sure it originally was knowing the years of personal tragedy that have followed for Nick: the death of two sons (one especially young), the death of a band mate, as well as a former lover/muse/friend.
Cave says many ridiculous things in this film, but are they not true? I believe that he believes them, that this is what music and songwriting mean to him.
It helps that this movie ends with a stunning performance of one of the best songs of the 21st century.
Nick Cave is now 23,676 days old, and I'm sure that he is a somewhat different person than he was when this was recorded (and I think this year's This Much I Know to Be True is evidence of that). But I do hope, this sort of whimsical, visceral person is still there in some capacity. I still need to see that person live, and scream in my fucking face. Shoot me in my fucking face, my blue fucking face.
The sky out my windows, has gone real blue now
