If Gene Hackman is reading me bedtime stories, I am NOT falling asleep. Keep talking Mr. Hackman.
Soul-shattering. Simple on the surface, but the character work here feels endlessly complex. Perfectly composed cinematography that is almost incongruent with the quiet subversions of genre convention. The incredible pulpy stylization of Leone is not present, but Unforgiven furthers the demythologization of the Western that Leone and Eastwood began, bringing it to its natural horrific end. Even the score functions in this way, relatively non-existent in its use compared to the Westerns that came before it (but when Eastwood does drop the needle on the few main themes, he sucks your life away).
A brutal and honest exploration of what it means to take a life.
