It's been many, many years since I last watched A New Hope, probably since before The Force Awakens was released. After such a long period of Star Wars oversaturation, and the absolute trainwreck that was The Rise of Skywalker (and quite frankly, the entire sequel trilogy), rewatching the original film was refreshing.
There's something really charming and even quaint about A New Hope. It doesn't get bogged down in all the garbage that every single other Star Wars movie since the original trilogy has. It's a simple story, it looks very cheap at times, it's hokey and fun and really silly, and it seems like it knows these things. The only thing to really dislike about this movie is the horrific CGI that Lucas decided needed to be shoved in there when he was making his terrible prequels. The Mos Eisley scene looks fucking shit now, and I really wish the original films were easily available instead of these CGI laden mistakes.
Yes, it's Star Wars, and it's awesome. I really wish they could have just left it alone though, instead of turning it into the hideous money machine that it is now. Watching this today is a bittersweet experience.
